"One of the most fascinating details about Shardana resides in the vines: some are over 100 years old, from rare pre-phylloxera stock. Their roots grow in finely textured, wind-swept sand that naturally prevents phylloxera from depositing its eggs! This exceptional circumstance, together with state-of-the-art quality standards and 10 months' careful élevage in Allier and Tronçais barrique, produce an extract-packed, luscious, full bodied Carignano varietal, with just a touch of Shiraz. The color is a deep, purple with ruby reflections indicating concentration, intensity, and complexity. Its black cherry notes are confirmed on the nose, where fruit, leather and game are laced with subtle spice. On the palate, there are lingering aromas of overripe cherries, well integrated oak and spices. Soft, smooth texture and layered structure, very long finish." —importer

Santadi's seaside vineyards are located in Sulcis, one of the hottest and most arid parts of the island of Sardinia and truly suited to stressing the vines into giving up the most concentrated fruit possible. This gave us a huge wine in 2008, with concentrated, liqueur-like black raspberry fruit and a tar/black olive note which gives lip-smacking savor to the whole.
"Black cherries, licorice, smoke, sweet herbs and tar all meld together in the 2008 Shardana, a blend of 90% old-vine Carignano and 10% Syrah. A deep, fleshy wine, the 2008 impresses for its balance and sheer character. The style is dark, brooding and intense, largely because of the Syrah, but it all works, and beautifully.
