"The outstanding quality of the 2012 vintage shines in this Cinq Cépages wine. The nose offers layers of complex aromas including black currant, chocolate covered Bing cherry, wild mountain blackberry fruit, cassis and a soft sweet earth note. Nuanced notes of spicy jasmine and crushed rock are intriguing and add depth to the nose. The aromas lead to a plush palate with rich flavors of boysenberry, dark chocolate and black tea. The full-bodied wine is refined with well-integrated, ripe tannins offering good structure." —winemaker

Blend: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 2% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot

Wine Anthology review:
St. Jean winemaker Margo Van Staaveren continues the Cinq Cépages tradition – a red blend of five grape varieties – with a luscious 2012 that pays tribute to the Bordeaux style while remaining rooted firmly in Sonoma. The 2012 features copious notes of ripe red cherry, licorice, incense, and lavender with a terrific medium-full body that stays juicy and lush through its entire length. There's no hurry to open this wonderfully proportioned 2012 as it's only going to get better and better over the next decade or more.
"The 2012 Cinq Cepages is plump, juicy and forward. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, menthol, mocha and dark spices are all pushed forward. This is a decidedly radiant, supple Cinq Cepages that should provide readers with a good decade-plus of fine drinking. As always, Cinq Cepages is bold, racy and fruit-driven in style. Drinking window: 2017 - 2026." —Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"The 2012 Proprietary Red Cinq Cepages is made from five Bordeaux varietals – 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in primarily French oak. The wine has a dense ruby/purple color, loads of crushed rock, cedar wood, chocolate, blackcurrant and Chinese black tea notes. It is medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin and an impressive future. This wine will actually benefit from several years of bottle age and should last 15 or more years." —Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
