Gaja Barbaresco DOCG 2011

"The centerpiece of the portfolio, Gaja Barbaresco is a testament to the Gaja family's historic commitment to the appellation and its belief that Barbaresco stands proudly with the great growing regions of the world. The Gaja winery stopped sourcing fruit from other growers in 1961 in order to ensure the utmost quality in its wines. In all, Gaja Barbaresco is produced using grapes grown in 14 vineyards in the village of Barbaresco. Garnet in color, the nose is almost sensual in its complexity, with aromas of forest fruits, plums, licorice, mineral and coffee scents. Long, complex finish with fine, silk-like tannins and good acidity; dense structure, full of super-ripe fruit." —importer

"Extremely perfumed with roses, dark berries, ash, asphalt, and sliced plums. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a juicy, savory finish. Orange and lemon peel undertones. Gorgeous finish. Hard not to drink now. A beautiful wine. Drink or hold. But why wait?" —James Suckling

"Crushed flowers, tobacco, sweet spices and red berries lift from the glass in the 2011 Barbaresco. Soft silky and accessible, the Barbaresco is already wonderfully open and expressive, as so many wines are in this vintage. Kirsch, hard candy and floral notes add nuance over time. The style is mid-weight and gracious, with gorgeous aromatic complexity and plenty of brightness, especially within the context of the year. Drinking window: 2016-2033." —Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"Smooth and elegant, this opens with a lovely fragrance of violet, rose, lush dark fruit and a whiff of cake spices. The juicy palate doles out ripe black cherry, licorice and mocha alongside silky tannins. It's surprisingly fresh and precise for what was a hot and precocious vintage." —Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast Magazine

"Powerful, pure, extremely deep; velvety tannins." —Decanter Magazine

Quintessa 2007

"There is a sense of sophistication and well-managed ripeness that seem a constant in the best Cabernets of the vintage, and both are apparent in this complex and very well-crafted wine. A nice splash of sweet oak highlights the very keen curranty fruit in its aromas and continues on as a sympathetic partner to themes of cassis and black cherries in the wine's lengthy and beautifully proportioned flavors. Ageworthy by dint of its balance rather than for forbidding astringency, this is one tohide away for at least a half dozen years and more."

"The 2007 looks to be one of Quintessa's stronger efforts in a number of years. Dark ruby/purple, with sweet black currant, cherry, and loamy soil notes intermixed with some subtle spice box and background oak, this wine is rich and medium to full-bodied, with round, silky tannins, and an attractive set of aromatics. Very accessible and drinkable now, it should age nicely for 15 or more years." -Robert Parker

"A very fine Cab from the estate, which is in the north-central part of the Rutherford appellation. Judging from the tannins, it’s too youthful to drink now, with a tight, astringent mouthfeel and fleshy, unintegrated oak. But the flavors are extraordinary. They flood the mouth with the essence of Cabernet, with ripe blackberries, black currants, raspberries and mocha, and the spicy finish lasts for a full minute. Give it until 2013, and it should provide great drinking through 2019, at least." -SH
