Wolffer Estate Diosa Late Harvest Chardonnay 2014

"White Horse wines embody the strong heritage and high quality of Wölffer Estate. This ice wine is made by freezing the ripe, golden fruit from the fantastic 2014 growing season. This concentrated wine still has lively acidity and lush fruit character. It will only become more complex and beautiful with aging over the next 40 years." —winemaker

"The 2014 Diosa Late Harvest is mostly a 50/23 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, with 15% Vignoles and 12% Gewurztraminer. It comes in at 10.5% alcohol and 220 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is an ice wine style, artificially frozen. Just about what you'd expect, this is rich and sugary, with oodles of apricots and peaches lingering on the long and irresistible finish. There is some spice hidden in there and some acidity (ten grams), too, although it is not yet balancing the sugar perfectly. Sexy, succulent and delicious, it's a full-on dessert wine. It should age well—"to be modest, let's say 50," joked (sort of) Roman Roth in talking about that. Well, we'll see. I prefer to take a lot of things like that in stages. (There's a pretty good chance many of us won't find out if 50 years is right, anyway!) Also, remember that it will change in character dramatically as it ages and oxidizes. One thing that is clear, though, is that this will be better with five years on it, when it will seem even more concentrated and less overtly sugary. It should be pretty special. If you insist on unrestrained decadence, I will not judge you. Dive in now. The price applies to a 375-milliliter bottle, from which this was tasted." —Mark Squires, The Wine Advocate
