Anselmo Mendes Muros Antigos Alvarinho 2018

"White wine from the Alvarinho grape variety, grown exclusively in Monção and Melgaço. It originates in vineyards on sunny hillsides with poor granite soils. Citrus and slightly tropical notes. Full bodied with good structure, fresh and mineral. Long finish with the light bitter citrus taste of the Alvarinho variety." —winemaker

"The 2018 Alvarinho Muros Antigos comes in at 13% alcohol, 6.1 grams of total acidity and 1.8 grams of residual sugar. Showing good concentration and a fine expression of fruit on opening, this tastes great and has distinction too. There's a long tradition in this bottling of both quality and value. This is no different, but for bargain hunters, I would have to say that the Contacto this year, at the same price, seems to be a little better—deeper, with a longer finish. Although, if you're comparing, this Muros Antigos has some virtues of its own, including a brighter and livelier feel with more perceptible acidity (although the numbers look similar, this just seems brighter). I really liked how this developed in the glass in terms of power, but the expression of fruit became a little less interesting. Maybe it is just a little too young? This should age pretty well, so there is no rush. There were 130,000 bottles produced from vines ranging between 15 and 25 years in age." —Wine Advocate
