Montevetrano Colli di Salerno Red 2016

"Montevetrano is a Colli di Salerno IGT red wine made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Aglianico Taurasi. The grapes are grown and the wine now produced just a few miles outside Salerno, at Silvia Imparato's Montevetrano estate in San Cipriano Picentino. Produced from local grapes, Montevetrano is vinified and bottled on the estate ensuring full control throughout the productive cycle. Its colour is a deep, intense and concentrated ruby red. It has scents of woodland with hints of violet, blackberry and cherry. Spiced tones drawing on liquorice, myrtle, cinnamon or chocolate, mint and tobacco, depending on the year and the development in ripening; well balanced through a magnificent blend of tannins, acidity and wood, it has the promise of a young wine that ages well, transforming from such a sensual concentration into elegance." —winemaker

"Color: A black core with a barely visible purple rim.
Nose: Classic Kalimna, with trademark red fruits and a familial old-worldliness. Juniper and blackberry fruits, and raspberry stick and red liquorice flavourings. A carbon black 'sumpiness'/quince paste amalgam laced with a ferric/formic piquant lift. Possibly oak-induced, barrel-fermented eugenol/pink peppercorn/fresh green-tobacco aromatics.
Palate: Viscous, Velvety, Voluminous. (Editors note: the BOLD V is deliberate) A 'tannin tsunami'… riding a ripe and even wave across the palate. "Deep and generous red with a dark core. This wine instantly proclaims Penfolds...and then, naturally Coonawarra! An aromatic color chart reveals red, rather than blue or black fruits. Also red licorice, black olive. Hovering above — wafts of tomato, quince, and cabernet paste meshed with cinnamon and nutmeg yeast-bun spices. Swirling and time in glass reveal fresh, bright beetroot and star-anise/soy Asian artefact. Exotic, with barely-discernible oak (French?) at least offering one recognizable sensory hook. Although flavors of cola, sarsaparilla and white chocolate are immediately apparent, it is the structure and textural weave that impact. At once, it is tight, focused, and poised. A multi-dimensional continuum, difficult to de-construct." —winemaker
