"Montessu comes from Sulcis Iglesiente, a region within southwest Sardinia whose brown earth has sandy soil that is a mixture of clay and limestone. This combines with warm, well-exposed terrain to form ideal conditions to produce great red wines. Deep ruby red in color, the wine shows intensely fruity aromas and flavors with a liquorice finish. An elegant wine with a full mouthfeel." —winemaker

Montessu is a red blend with some similarities to the Bordeaux style, including Merlot, Cabernet, and Cab Franc, but its majority (60%) Carignano is where the French comparison ends and the Sardinian style begins! Tachis writes of the island: "Winemaking in the south is far more satisfying; the aromatic complexity is richer, the experience is more intense." This is island heat in a bottle, with a savory tang to its flavors of dark fruit and smoky herbs. Some have called Montessu's style "super Sardinian," drawing a comparison to the super Tuscans of the north.
