"Classic McLaren Vale aromas of plum, blackberry, licorice and spice. There is a strong sense of the old vines and infertile soils evidenced through a raft of dark, earthy notes and thick, black molasses characters. There is enough savory oak character to support the generous fruit but it isn’t the dominant feature, rather an intrinsic component of an ever changing bouquet of complex characters that ebb and flow. The palate has an incredible depth of flavor and a solid structure built on a framework of firm tannins. This is a wine of great presence and boldness but with a refined, stylish finish that lingers on and on." —winemaker

Wine Anthology review:
Dead Arm, named after the vine disease that leaves one "arm" of the vine dry and brittle, is d'Arenberg's most famous wine and is known worldwide as one of the great Australian Shiraz wines. This 2012 continues Dead Arm's incredible track record with a wealth of aromas that range from sweet blueberry jam to savory olive tapenade to smoked bacon. The well-structured palate gives all the competing elements an equal feature, with an acidic edge cutting through the smooth, velvety mouthfeel. As always, this is one Shiraz that you can hold onto for another decade, at the least.
"Classic release. Meaty and substantial, but poised. Blackberries, smoked herbs, crushed ants and earth. Sweet fruit rushes and fills; savoury notes sweep through the flanks. Firm but exuberant. Irrepressible." —James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion

"Shiraz in a very attractive guise here, this has a little peppery edge with red fruits, raspberry leaf and red liquorice too, plus a little boysenberry and a meaty edge. The palate has a core of dark plum flavor, cedary oak and a fine, savory tannin web; I like the freshness and concentration here. Best from 2022." —JamesSuckling.com

"Youthful purple. Primary black and blue fruits, floral pastilles, Indian spices and vanilla on the deeply perfumed nose, with a smoky mineral quality adding urgency and lift. Sweet, deeply pitched boysenberry and cherry-cola flavors spread out impressively on the palate, picking up spiciness and a touch of mocha on the back half. This lush, broad, seamless Shiraz finishes with excellent clarity and smooth tannins that contribute structure and gentle grip. Drinking window: 2023 - 2030." —Josh Raynolds, Vinous
