"The vineyard of La Grande Vignolle rests atop a tufa-stone outcrop that runs along the Loire river for a number of kilometers. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the stone, a creamy colored limestone, was quarried for building some of the great monuments and châteaux of the Loire. Cave dwellings and a few formidable houses were actually carved into the cliffs. The La Grande Vignolle label is a depiction of this site. The soil and subsoil of the vineyard are highly calcareous. This type of soil lends the Cabernet Franc grapes juicy flavors and good acidity. The vines are of considerable age and yields are kept low. The wine is vinified in stainless-steel and bottled unfiltered. It is rich in red fruit flavors, with a touch of tobacco and licorice in the finish and has excellent aging potential." —importer
"I first tasted the 2012 la Grande Vignolle bottling from Domaine Filliatreau two years ago and loved the wine, but worried about it being sealed with a plastic cork. Twenty-four months down the road, the wine is aging beautifully and it certainly seems that my initial fears about its closure were unwarranted. The bouquet is bright and complex, wafting from the glass in a superb blend of cassis, black cherries, cigar smoke, dark soil tones, tree bark, chicory and a nice touch of grilled meat. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a superb core of fruit, impeccable balance and a long, still moderately tannic finish. Just a beautiful bottle of Saumur-Champigny aging gracefully. 2016-2030+." —John Gilman, View from the Cellar (92 points)
