"In the glass, this wine appears inky-black with a velvety core; however, on the nose, you are treated to the lightness of fresh violets, crushed blueberries, and cocoa. Complexity is confirmed on the palate with a combination of ripe blueberries and blackberries dusted with hints of cedar, tobacco, spice, and ash. Bright acidity, firm tannins, and moderate alcohol create a balanced structure with a long and seamless finish hinting of toasted vanilla and hazelnuts. Made from the best vines on DAOU Mountain, this wine beautifully showcases the characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon as a varietal." —winemaker

Soul of a Lion is the flagship wine of Daou Vineyards, made almost entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon with a splash of Petit Verdot for extra flavor and texture. This is Daou's baby, with fruit from the estate's best vines in the Adelaida district of Paso Robles, and in 2012 Soul of a Lion was a true gem. In the winery's words, the 2012 vintage resulted in "beautifully robust wines concentrated in color and with plenty of structure," with this wine revealing aromatic blackberry and black raspberry notes that mingle with pipe tobacco and vanilla. It's powerful on the palate and shows off terrific persistence, with enough energy in reserve to last another decade and a half in the cellar.
